Antequera is situated inland from the Costa del Sol in the heart of Andalucia. Located on a fertile plain, Antequera is also known as the crossroads of Andalucia. The history to be found here far exceeds that of any other place in Spain. You know when you are approaching Antequera as its Medieval spires stand out from on the skyline. You will find treasures from all ages as far back as the Bronze Age in this small city. This ancient city has so much on offer all you have to do is get out and take a relaxing stroll around the streets. One of the things you will run across is the Roman Arco de los Gigantes (Giants Arch) which gives you a great view over the city and the surrounding countryside. The one thing that really dominates Antequera is the Arab Castle and is well worth a visit. The Dolmen Caves which are famous throughout Europe are also found here in Antequera and open to the public and is believed to date back as far back as 2,500 B.C.

There is some of the most enjoyable countryside surrounding Antequera for the walker, biker, horse rider or by car that you can explore at your leisure. A special place to visit is La Pena de los Enamorados or Lover's Leap, a huge crag and stands some 880 meters above the town. If you want to venture a bit further afield then take the 40 minute drive over to the Fuente de Piedra lakes where you may just catch the flamingos during their migratory season, not literally of course if not then the countryside scenery more than makes up for it.

If you are going to book your holiday in Antequera be sure and book it during the Holy Week. This is when all the locals celebrate with ceremonies, music, and traditional food dishes that date back to the Baroque times. If you can't make it during the Holy Week then set aside some time during May for the Spring Feria or in August for the Real Feria. This is when you really begin to know what Spain is all about with huge displays including bull fighting.
