Island of Tabarca – Seafood, Barbary Pirates, History

The Island of Tabarca is situated around 11 miles south east of Alicante and 3 miles from the cape in Santa Pola. If you are here during the off peak season you can relax and enjoy a week-end getaway. With its 1,800 meters in length and 400 meters in width there is a lot of space to enjoy the beauty of its landscape and the absolute quietness.

The Island of Tabarca is sometimes called the flat island or the new Tabarca. Tourism is an important factor here as there are around 3,000 daily visits in the peak season and a lesser number in the off season although the average temperature here is 17 deg. centigrade. There are various cruise lines which call here on a frequent timetable, depending on the season, and the boat trip from Alicante takes about 60 minutes.

While you are on your Costa Blanca Holidays and visiting the Island don't pass up the chance to eat at one of the local restaurants. There are local seafood dishes here that are to be found no where else. There are a number of historical sites here where you can pass the time exploring the past. Don't forget that the Barbary Pirates used this island as their base for their raids on the Costa Blanca to capture slaves.
