History of Ibiza

History on Ibiza Holidays
Enjoy the History of Ibiza

Like all other European mountain ranges, the BALEARIC ISLANDS rose to the earth crust approximately 12,000 years ago. Although in existence 8 million years ago, they were originally attached to the Spanish mainland. Ibiza is part of the Balearic islands and human habitation dates from at least 5000 BC.

The Carthaginians discovered Ibiza in 654 B.C. And named it Ibossim which is not too dissimilar to its present day name, it was at this time that they also founded Ibiza Town making it one of the earliest towns in Europe. The Romans arrived on the island and started the punic wars with the Carthaginians until they managed to overthrow them to take control and rename the island Ebusus only to become known as a confederate City. Later came the Barbarians and the Byzantine who ruled the island until the year 711 when the Arabs arrived.

It was in 1235 that the Christians toppled the Arabs and the Catalonians took control. Ibiza Town was considered unconquerable at that time due to its high city walls and location, however the ruling Sheik at the time had a disagreement with his brother about a mistress from his harem which led to the brother revealing the secret underground entrance to the Town. Once in power the Catalans tore down the Arab mosque and rebuilt the present day cathedral on its foundations and the villages of the island were renamed after Christian Saints.

Today there is a tremendous amount of historical evidence including the secret passage to Ibiza Town. When on your HOLIDAY TO SPAIN make sure and visit this passage to go back in time relating back to the many rulers the island has had, not least the odd shaped towers along the coast which served as watchtowers and defense towers against pirates.
