Overview of Costa Brava - Catalonia, Spain

Catalonia is an autonomous region where the southern two thirds makes up what is known as the Costa Dorada and north of Barcelona is more so known as the Costa Brava. This 250 mile stretch of coast line encompasses the outstanding Pyrenees Mountains along with the vibrant city of Barcelona.

As one would imagine most of the holiday villas are to be found on the coast line with Barcelona being a mainstay.

The first thing you need to do is get your bearings and what better way than a cable car ride across the Port Vell as this will give you a view of the whole area. When you take a Barcelona holiday home it will allow you the opportunity to discover the magnificence Barcelona Cathedral with its distinctive octagonal bell towers along with the Royal Palace and the Picasso Museum. On the door step of your Barcelona holiday villa there is an excellent zoo and one of Europe's largest aquarium's. You can use your holiday villa as a base to discover other places of historical interest such as the Monastery of Santus Creus and while you are in the area stop by the Penedes wineries for a wine sample. The Monastery of Montserrat, home of the Benedictine monks and the famous Black Virgin of Montserrat is a good place to spend the day while exploring the area or spend some time in the local museums where you will find the works of El Greco, Caravaggio and Correggio. If you have any time left, make a trip over to Girona so you can see the magnificent cathedral located there.

The Costa Brava consists of a number of small towns and some traditional little fishing villages such as La Escala, Palamos or Sant Feliu de Guixols. There are a number of places you can visit in this area based on what you want to do. If you are a nature lover then there is the Parc Natural de Cap de Creus or the Parc Natural Aiguamolls in L'Emporda as well as the beautiful botanic gardens in Blanes and Lloret de Mar. The history buff can find a lot to explore in the medieval cities such as Pals, Peratallada and the ancient city of Tossa de Mar. Not to be missed out on is the beautiful white sandy beaches and all of the entertainment on offer near your Costa Brava holiday villa.

The Costa Dorada has many towns situated close together allowing holidaymaker to find anything they may require. There are some interesting towns located inland that you need to put on your schedule such as Reus, Valls, Montblanc, Tortosa and the medieval monasteries of Poble, Santes Creus and Scala Dei. There is just to much to do in this area but the one thing you can do as you travel around is notice the beautiful countryside of Prades and Siurana along with the rugged mountain ranges with their big game reserves in Tivissa, Cardo and Ports de Tortosa. The Ebro river delta has a lot to offer in the way of water sports, fishing and even a bit of wild fowl hunting.

The capital of Catalonia is the exciting city of Barcelona where you will find just about anything you need on holiday. It is known for its indigenous architecture, fashion boutiques, exuberant night life, and world class Catalan cuisine. If you take a Barcelona holiday rental apartment in the old section, Las Ramblas or the Gothic Quarter, the little winding streets will offer up lot's of history for you to explore. Along these streets there are street performers, artists and vendors for your enjoyment.

The Costa Brava is made up of four regions, L'Alt Emporda, Baix Emporda, La Selva and Girones that stretches some 160 km along this magnificence coast line in the northern region of Catalonia. The holiday homes located here have the availability of beautiful sandy beaches that seam to go on for miles and miles with the natural beauty of the countryside surrounding them with all of the glorious sunshine found here. Along this coast you will find traditional fishing villages, secluded coves and medieval towns some with ancient castles.

The Costa Dorada is made up of some 20 towns and miles of white sandy beaches fronted by crystal clear blue water. With the Pyrenees Mountains as a back drop and the Mediterranean sea in the fore ground, forgotten are the wide stretches of land in between where you will find tranquil little Spanish villages often surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, hazel nut trees and almond trees with the occasional vegetable patch. You will notice most of the old towns are situated on top of hills near the sea, this location enabled them to form a defense perimeter around the village against corsairs and the Barbary Pirates in times long ago. The tourist centres located along the coast such as Sitges, Tarragona and Delta del Ebro have been developed along these same lines.
