Lliria information

The nearest town to Villa Jazmin is Lliria. Most of the 22,000-strong Population play a Musical Instrument of some kind, and the town is known for the fierce competition between its two rival Musical Colleges ‚?? the Banda Primitiva, and the Uni√≥ Musical.

The town itself is not the prettiest in the region, but the old part of town is quite interesting ‚?? if you wander upwards from the main square, behind the Iglesia de la Asunci√≥n, you pass through narrow streets with whitewashed houses, until you arrive at the 13th Century Iglesia de la Sang and, looking oddly out of place next to the ancient architecture, the very modern Lliria Archeological Museum. It‚??s also worth making the climb up to the San Miguel Monastery on the hill above the town ‚?? the Monastery itself is interesting, and the views are fabulous. It‚??s possible to drive up there, although the street is narrow in places ‚?? if you‚??re not well-practised with Hill Starts, you might find walking less stressful!

The town comes alive at Fiesta time, and the two biggest ones of the year are the Fiesta de San Vicente Ferrer, on the first weekend after Easter, and the Fiesta de San Miguel, which runs for two weeks up to September 19th. However, there are numerous other minor events throughout the year ‚?? many involving Music, so whenever you visit there‚??s a reasonable chance that something will be going on ‚?? just ask at the Tourist Office.

The main shopping areas of the town are in the centre between the Town Square and the Main Street (Calle de Duc de Lliria), and along Pla de L‚??Arc, which is the main road out of town towards Marines and Olocau. The Mercadona supermarket has most of the essentials you‚??ll need, and has a free Car Park above it.

Lliria is at the end of Metro Line 1 into Valencia City. You‚??ll find the Metro Station near the bottom of town, and trains run at least twice each hour throughout the day. The trip takes about 50 minutes, and the last train back is at 22:23 ‚?? just about the time when the bars in Valencia are starting to get lively!

Popular with families at weekends and holidays, the San Vicente Natural Park, 3Km out of town towards Marines, is a leafy Oasis with Acacias and Eucalyptus trees, with a small chapel, and plenty of BBQ/Paella areas. During the week it‚??s quieter, and a nice place to stroll along the river.

Local Amenities

The small town of Marines, a 15 minute drive away has a few local shops, including a Cake Shop, two Bakeries, a General Store, a Butcher, a Fishmonger, and several bars, most of which serve tapas or bocadillos (filled rolls). There‚??s also a Petrol Station here which has basic provisions, and is open on Sundays (one of the few places anywhere which is!) ‚?? they also have Butane Gas bottles (approx ‚?¨11), in the event that one of the ones at the house runs out.

Lliria ‚?? which is roughly the same distance, is a much larger town, with plenty of Restaurants, Bars, and other shops. You will probably find most things you need in the Mercadona supermarket, but if not, there is a much bigger Carrefour Hypermarket at L‚??Eliana, about 5 minutes down the CV-35 highway.

There are plenty of interesting places suitable for a day out, within a short drive, and also further afield. Since buying the property a few years ago, we‚??ve explored the surrounding area, and below are a few of the attractions we think are worth a visit.

We provide a lot of this information in a Welcome Pack when you arrive at the Villa, but if there‚??s anything that particularly appeals, you might want to print it off before you arrive.

Lliria sits within the Turia valley, and it‚??s well worth exploring some of the towns and villages further upstream. Chelva is a pretty town on a hill above the river, and there‚??s a pleasant river walk, as well as a Roman Aqueduct to visit.

Another charming town is Chulilla, with Moorish Battlements above the town, and a deep ravine below. There are also walks down into the ravine from the town.

No trip to the region would be complete without a visit to Valencia City, of course. The City has something for everyone, from the ancient architecture of the Basilica and the Silk Exchange, the Beautiful Turia Gardens, to the amazing modern architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences, with its IMAX cinema, Science Museum, and Oceanographic Centre. There's also a very modern Zoo called the Bioparc which is highly recommended.

If you fancy a day on the beach, there are several within a 40-45 minute drive, including the one in Valencia City itself.

A little further afield are the town of Sagunto, with its huge castle; Vall d'Uixo, with an Underground River; or for a complete change of scene, there are a couple of theme parks within 2-3 hours drive.

Local Fiestas
Every town and village in Spain has it‚??s own Fiesta ‚?? sometimes more than one!

The major Fiestas in Lliria are the Fiesta of San Miguel, and the Fiesta of San Vicente, while Valencia City has what is arguably Spain‚??s most Famous Fiesta, Las Fallas.

Another fiesta known widely outside Spain is La Tomatina in Bu√Īol, where in August each year they have the world's biggest food fight with over-ripe tomatoes!

Our website gives details of many of the local fiestas - please ask for details.

A Relaxing Easter Break

Review Submitted: 15-12-2010

We have just returned from a peaceful and relaxing Easter holiday at Villa Jazmin. The villa is set in a beautiful location, fairly remote but with next door neighbours and only 10 mins drive from the nearest town for supermarkets etc (hypermarket 15 mins drive). The description of the villa in the advert was detailed and accurate (link to owners website was useful as this site had additional photos & information). The villa was comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. We barbecued most nights during our stay on the excellent gas barbecue and the children loved the pool even though it was a bit chilly at that time of year. The owner provided excellent directions to the villa (we were driving from Madrid) and was easy to contact with questions regarding the villa prior to our visit. I would definitely recommend a stay at this property.

Valencia Holiday Jul-Aug10

Review Submitted: 15-12-2010

We stayed at the Villa Jazmin at the end of July and had a great time. it's ideally located to venture into Valencia and other surrounding towns/villages. The instructions for the villa along with other destinations were very helpful. We hired a car as this is essential for getting around. There were a lot of flies due to the weather being hot and the villa's location but plenty of screening on windows and doors to keep them out of the villa. TV and games were useful in keeping the kids entertained but there is also an array of board games/cards as well. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the necessary crockery. The only negative thing I can say is that the kitchen and bathrooms need a little bit of updating, other than that we had a fabulous holiday. Thanks.

Thanks Jo! We know that flies can be a problem in the middle of summer - it's a common problem with most rural areas in Spain. We tried the Eco-friendly approach last year, buying Basil plants for the terrace, which are supposed to keep them away - but unfortunately they needed constant watering, which they didn't always get. For 2011, we plan to get an Electronic zapper for the terrace, which should help. The Kitchen and Bathrooms are on our "To-do" list. Since we bought the villa, we've been addressing more urgent problems, such as tiling the pool and the rear terrace, and rebuilding the front wall, but we hope to get to the Kitchen and Bathrooms soon!
