Lloret de Mar

Towns and Resorts - Girona

Lloret de Mar was a little sleepy Spanish fishing village on the Costa Brava, up until the 1950's when the city fathers decided to try and attract more of the tourist trade. At this time they bulldozed a lot of the city centre as well as some Mayoral homes to make way for new hotels, apartments, villas and town houses. They didn't stop there, they revamped the municipal facilities as well as the coastline to accommodate the European holiday-maker. As a result the fishing industry fell into decline and the tourist trade became the principal business.

Lloret de Mar now boast 100's of bars, clubs and restaurants to satisfy your every need. There are many different types of cuisine with a range of prices that will accommodate anyone's pocket book. If you are staying in a self-catering apartment, a trip to the local market is in order. A   weekly market is held every Tuesday on Carrer dels Mestres as well as the side streets where you can buy all of the locally grown produce that is needed.

If you're a history buff, then Lloret de Mar and the surrounding area is the place to visit. The history of Lloret de Mar dates as far back as the 3rd century BC when it was an Iberian settlement. Evidence of this can be found at the hilltop site of Puig de Castellet. Although it didn't get its name and recognition until 1001 AD, the name Lloret is believed to be Roman and taken from the Latin word Lauretum that means ''place of the laurels'', as they had established a settlement here during that period, . You may have to look hard to find the history but look at the fun you will have in doing it. To get you started there is the Roman Sepulchral which is a 2nd century Roman burial tower and the Santa Clotilde Gardens. There is a lot more so get looking.
